Portakabin Hire, a leading UK supplier of interim building solutions, has been awarded a £13.5 million contract – the largest in the division’s 52-year history – to expand ward and theatre accommodation for orthopaedic services at Royal Stoke University Hospital.
A complex 4,000sqm, two-storey building will be constructed in less than four months to increase capacity at the hospital, to the benefit of patient care.
Due for completion in spring 2015, the purpose-designed facilities will include 56 new in-patient beds, two theatres, recovery room, ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ utilities, single rooms with en-suite bathrooms, staff changing rooms, reception, kitchenette, offices, and an integral plant room.
The building will be craned into position as 124 steel-framed modules which will be delivered to site complete with wall finishes, internal partitioning, M&E services and flooring already in place, further reducing work and disruption on this busy hospital site. The cranage phase will be a complex operation as the site is located adjacent to other wards and close to the A34 which will restrict vehicle movements.
