The Council is taking the lead by developing a state-of-the-art community hub with a six-lane 25 metre swimming pool, plus a learner pool, a sports hall and high quality gym facilities. The development will also include a library and customer service centre offering easy access to services provided by the Council, South Tyneside Homes and other partners.
The major investment will provide quality services, boost the town centre and help attract private sector investment.
The community hub will be in the heart of the town centre, providing easy links to the shopping centre and surrounding housing areas. The hub’s entrance will be close to the main shopping centre thoroughfares of St James’ Mall and St John’s Precinct, creating a new focal point for Hebburn.Hebburn Pool
Design work on the community hub began in November 2012 and the proposals were displayed at Hebburn Pool, Hebburn Library and Hebburn Community Centre in March. The planning application was submitted by Faulkner Browns architects on behalf of the Council in late March and was approved at Planning Committee on Monday 17th June.
In the meantime more detailed design work will be continuing to allow the Council’s contractor, Willmott Dixon, to tender the works and for the application for Building Regulations approval to be submitted.
