In November 2010 the Cabinet approved initial investment to bring forward the Council’s ambition to improve the both the quality and number of homes available in the borough through an estate renewal programme.
The estate renewal programme began with the Eastern side of the Gascoigne Estate, Goresbrook Village and the Leys Estate. The following areas within those estates were identified as phase 1:
- Gascoigne Estate – 1 – 70 Grange House and 17 – 28 St Margarets
- Goresbrook Village – All properties in Dunmow House, Bassett House and Ingrave House
- The Leys Estate – 1 – 34 and 42 -50 Birdbrook Close
The Cabinet agreed in May 2012 that residential properties 21 – 91 Althorne Way, Dagenham and the ground floor retail units should also be included within the current estate renewal programme. In August 2012 renewal of Gascoigne Estate phase 2 and the remaining properties in Bridbrook Close and Wellington Drive was announced.
Since the programme started in December 2010, over 600 tenants have been rehoused and we have negotiated and bought back over 70 leases from leaseholders across the estate renewal areas.
The council are either directly or with partners bringing forward the redevelopment of these areas. Over the next 18 months, residents will start to see a change bringing new homes and services to the borough.
