In the Highlands, north of Inverness, students aged from 3 to 18 are enjoying the health and comfort benefits of the region’s first Passivhaus-standard school.
The new £72 million Tain Campus is now home to Tain Royal Academy, Tain Primary School and St Duthus School. It has been constructed to the Passivhaus standard to reduce energy consumption and create a healthy learning environment.
The external wall specification included two Proctor Group membranes: the Wraptite® external air barrier system to the outside of the structure, and Procheck® A2 internally.
Veitchi Interiors installed both membranes as part of their work package. They played a proactive role in determining how the project was delivered. Thanks to having their own Metframe panel factory, they proposed installing Wraptite in the factory.
Following discussions at the project’s pre-start meeting, both Highland Council (client) and Kier (main contractor) were happy to explore it.
In such a northerly location, and also on the coast, weather was inevitably a factor. Removing the labour of the Wraptite installation meant the only work then needed on site was the application of tapes where required to fully seal the system against the wind and rain.
Alongside more formal Passivhaus training, Veitchi Interiors received an array of technical support from Proctor Group. Regional Sales Manager Linda Kay delivered a CPD training session on the products, followed by multiple site visits.
Wraptite is both airtight and highly vapour permeable, helping to achieve high standards of airtightness without increasing condensation risk in the structure. Its self-adhered installation is designed to ensure a consistent airtight external seal.
Procheck A2 is a vapour and airtight membrane that is also rated A2-s1,d0 when classified to BS EN 13501-1. It is therefore considered non-combustible, with no contribution to fire.
