Marley Alutec has provided a rainwater solution for the redevelopment of a North London hospital, helping to achieve the right aesthetics with a sustainable material.
Environmental concerns are more important than ever. When looking to build greener, it is worthwhile considering the positive role aluminium systems can play. An infinitely recyclable building material, it is estimated that nearly 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today.
An aluminium rainwater system was recently used at Woodside Square, a redevelopment of St. Luke’s Hospital, located in the Muswell Hill area of North London. Designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards architects, the new six-acre development, comprising 159 homes specifically for over 55s, incorporated high-quality materials and beautiful design details to capture the post-Edwardian area’s contemporary style.
Marley Alutec’s Aligator snapfit boltless rainwater gutters were included in the specification following a RIBA accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) session on sustainable aluminium rainwater solutions at the architects’ practice. Aluminium was specified as the ideal material for juxtaposing careful restoration against modern styling.
Sustainability was also a key part of the concept for Woodside Square, not only in terms of energy efficiency but also the building materials chosen. The low environmental impact and infinite recyclability of aluminium further justified its use.
The Admin block used Traditional Moulded Ogee gutters, manufactured to BS8530, as an authentic replacement for the existing cast iron, modified for rear outlet discharge into in-situ pipework. The Roseneath and Norton Leas blocks utilised Marley Alutec’s Tudor 102mm pipe range.
The design and production of these bespoke gutter and pipe fittings enabled the unobtrusive installation of the aluminium systems to meet the design brief. To help ensure the project ran smoothly, the Marley Alutec team regularly attended the site to provide specialist advice on the system’s design and installation.
Finally, Marley Alutec’s marine-grade aluminium solutions ensure even greater robustness and heightened performance levels when compared to standard aluminium.
