Be prepared that you will need to do a bit of cutting so for health and safety reasons make sure to check the wall, detecting and making sure that there are no wires, pipes or any other items that might get accidentally cut. In some situations, the damaged plasterboard wall can be fixed with the joint tape and drywall compound also known as mud.

Step 1: Draw a rectangle around the hole in the plasterboard wall.

Step 2: You will have to use a sharp utility knife to cut the damaged hole into the rectangular shape that you have drawn around.

Step 3: To prepare replacement pieces, you must measure the size of the new rectangular hole then cut two plasterboard pieces where one is the identical size as the hole, and the other one about 20mm larger.

Step 4: Use PVA adhesive and apply it around the edges of the larger plasterboard piece on one side only.

Step5: Position the cut and glued piece into the hole in the wall and hold firmly until the adhesive sets.

Step 6: Apply the adhesive to a smaller plasterboard piece and insert the piece into the hole allowing the plasterboard adhesive to dry off completely.

Step 7: The filler will help to fill up the gaps, so apply the filler evenly to the remaining gaps and let it dry.

Step 8: Once the surface is completely dry use the sanding block to achieve a smooth and even finish.

Step 9: Clean the surface making sure that the sanding dust is completely gone.

Step 10: Once the surface is sanded and cleaned the surface is ready to be painted.
