Since lockdown began in March 2020, after an initial quiet period during a normally very busy time for the industry, waste management has seen an unprecedented demand. Fowles Skip Hire, based near Windsor, has a waste transfer and processing station, handling much of the waste for skip hire businesses across Berkshire, Surrey, and Hampshire. Managing Director Billy Fowles stated,
“We have seen a major increase in demand for both small residential skips and large skip containers for commercial projects. This is a positive sign that the construction and home improvement industry is withholding the strain put on by the lockdown measures.”
Demand, in fact, has been so high that in some cases, skip hire companies are running out of skips, with November being one of the busiest dates on record.
Winter Lockdown Brought Boom in Home Improvement
The home improvement market wasn’t expected to boom during the Covid-19 lockdown. However, skip hiring businesses reported otherwise. During the winter, stores witnessed a significant rise in the sales of curtains and power tools. That said, hardware stores followed suit and stocked up everything from Christmas gnomes to power tools this winter while following the public interest of making home improvements during the primary lockdown in March 2020. The BHETA (British Home Enhancement Trade Association) estimated that roughly £550 million were spent more before Christmas on home improvement than last year.
In contrast, an up to 50% sale increase was recorded on curtains’ purchase during the lockdown. John Lewis also saw a 25% increase in virtual home design appointments where homeowners looking for home improvement were getting advice from experts. Before lockdown, people were spending more on outdoor projects. However, the lockdown steered their interest towards indoor projects, such as home renovation and interior design. 47% more customers sought hammers and power tools than the previous year. These statistics indicate that the nation is making the best of their free time by indulging in DIY home projects by renovating, re-constructing, and decorating. It has been estimated that with higher restrictions coming into play this year, people will more likely be putting their indoor times into doing up their homes and refreshing their interior surroundings.
Why to Hire a Skip During Home Improvement
Home improvement of all kinds demands hiring a skip to clean the waste, spring cleaning, and effective waste management. During spring cleaning, you will find plenty of items and hoarded materials in your house that need to be disposed of. When it comes to home renovation, your garden and backyard are part of it. After gardening, you are left with loads of debris, such as branches, leaves, rocks, weeds, and other items that need to be disposed of—if composting isn’t looking like the best solution, hiring a skip is the next best solution.
When remodelling, reconstructing and renovating your home, there may be rubbles and debris that waste management methods other than hiring a skip won’t accept. As such, a skip outside your home will deal with the additional waste in the best possible manner. Hiring a skip during home improvement is not only convenient but also cost-effective. Suppose the public skip is replete with trash and your trash collector refuses to take certain types of waste that are part of home improvement. What are your options? You can, either take up the cudgels and take your trash to a dumpsite on your own, which will cost you money and time. Or, you can also hire a skip from a reputable company and ask them to leave a skip outside your home. Whenever the skip gets full, you can ask the company to pick up the waste and dispose of it.
