A ‘first class’ adaptation has been achieved for a client with diverse needs by using a contractor with understanding of the objective.
As a result, 42 years-old Becky Downie from Exeter says she now feels safe, and has confidence; she is managing to live independently, with just one care visit/day, despite her various limitations which include IBS.
The achievement is the result of a series of changes to Becky’s bathroom, by First Class Independent Living, a division of First Class Builders Ltd, on behalf of Exeter Council.
First Class has converted the bathroom into a wetroom, added grab rails, shower screens and, most recently, a Closomat Palma Vita shower (wash dry) toilet tailored to her individual needs (infill panel, plinth and bariatric seat). The Closomat WC with its integrated wash and dry functions mean the user is not dependent on conventionally wiping – or being wiped – to be clean.
First Class was commissioned to undertake the Closomat installation; on visiting and talking to Becky about the challenges she was having, managing director Neil Golsworthy suggested the proposed Palma Vita should incorporate special height and seat upgrades, to enable Becky to get the most from the equipment. Adding an infill panel ensured the unit would fit snugly against the wall once in position.
Neil explained:
“The extra few millimetres gained by adding a plinth makes it much easier for Becky to get on and off, whilst a bariatric seat ensures she is sat correctly, supported and comfortable.”
Added Becky,
“Before, I was using a commode in the lounge because I couldn’t use the toilet in the wetroom. Neither the WC nor the commode met my needs. I was getting through three or four pairs of pyjama bottoms a day. I was often sore too as I wasn’t properly clean. Since I’ve had the Closomat, I can go to the loo whenever I want, feel safe doing so, and be clean. It has given me my confidence back. My carers have noticed too, and commented on the difference it has made to me.”
Closomat’s Palma Vita is the only shower toilet developed specifically for disabled people, and the brand leader. It is the only one that can be accessorised to individual user needs, at the outset or retrospectively. The bariatric seat is just one of a raft of options that enable the Closomat to be tailored: options also include different operating mechanisms, seats, plinths and a range of support systems. Details of the shower toilet, and accessories available, can be found on Closomat’s website www.clos-o-mat.com.
Closomat is further unique in offering initial commissioning, and in-house service & maintenance, as part of its commitment to enable dignified and hygienic intimate care. It also offers full UK-based pre- and post-sales support, including site survey, design advice, supply, installation, commissioning, and service & maintenance.
