Defending Schools from Vandalism and Damage

Following a merger of four local primary schools, the community of Port Glasgow, Scotland received a environmentally responsible education facility. With funding from Inverclyde Council, the school required a security solution that mitigated catastrophic vandalism, without creating a fortress.

Charter Global were approached during the early stages of the project conception, led by the client’s desire to provide an exceptionally high quality facility.

The Challenge

Designed by Studio E Architects, the state-of-the- art primary school faced a number of challenges.

Other schools in the district, including one involved in the merger, had suffered catastrophic damage from wilful fire-raising. As a heavily funded project, the facilities were a high risk for further malicious damage along with theft of expensive equipment. A high security alternative to grilles or standard security shutters was therefore required.

As the school overlooks the River Clyde, the landscape leant itself to the building’s concept, with sloping roof structure’s and valley-like subdivides within the playground.

The £9.6m project was designed to inspire the children and staff on site everyday. The solution implemented ultimately had to maintain the aesthetic properties so intrinsically designed, without compromising on security.

The Solution

Multiple Interg8 Structural Built In Shutters were implemented on site, securing all ground level apertures against unwanted intruders.

When deployed, the shutters secure the school from loss of irreplaceable documents and equipment, along with mitigating the risk of malicious property damage.

Working closely with Charter Global’s design team, the staple Integr8 structural lintels removed the need for any unsightly head-boxes. Recessed guide rails further reduced the shutter’s visual impact.

Finished in two colours, vibrant red and a contrasting blue, the shutters now play an important part in the bold and striking design of the school.

For the welfare and productivity of staff and students, a perforated curtain style was selected. This allows natural light and fresh air to enter the classrooms, even when the roller shutters have been deployed.
