Achieving a sustainable future with Newton Waterproofing

Sustainability is a topic now talked about daily within all sectors.

Just recently, the UN released a scientific report dubbed ‘code red for humanity’, warning of increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts and flooding, and a key temperature limit being broken in just over a decade.

With several innovative sustainability initiatives, Newton Waterproofing, the UK’s leading independent designers and suppliers of guaranteed waterproofing systems, is completely committed to reducing their impact on the environment.

Run in collaboration with their Specialist Contractors, the Tonbridge-based company’s Recycling Service was launched in 2017 as the first closed-loop recycling scheme of its kind in the UK waterproofing industry. This allowed them to actively collect and recycle off-cuts of waterproofing membrane from across the UK for recycling into new construction products.

Thanks to this scheme, to date they have stopped nearly 20 tonnes of plastic from going to landfill and preventing 22.79 tonnes of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

This year, Newton also partnered with leading hazardous waste management company Williams Environmental to expand the award-winning Recycling Service to include plastic tubs and metal containers from their liquid products. This expansion is expected to prevent over 7,000 containers from reaching landfill per year.

Responsible Sourcing

In December last year, Newton was proud to achieve certification to the BES 6001 standard by BRE Global for an entire waterproofing solution, the Newton System 500 cavity drain system for below-ground waterproofing.

To meet this standard, the company undertook a voluntary process to demonstrate its commitment to reducing the environmental and societal impacts of its construction products, through social awareness, sound environmental credentials and ethical practices.

As the first UK waterproofing supplier to have achieved this for an entire solution, Newton System 500 is now the only Type C waterproofing system that will contribute points towards the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).

With the new BES 6001 certification, Newton can ensure its customers’ waterproofing specifications not only protect their structure, but also helps to maximise their BREEAM score without compromising on performance.

Recycled Products

Working closely with their suppliers, Newton have also added three waterproofing products to their range that are manufactured from 100% recycled plastic, without any negative effect on their durability, longevity, or performance.

Firstly, Newton 508 eco Floor is an 8mm cavity drain membrane for basements, and 520 eco is a 20mm cavity drain floor membrane for situations where there is a risk of severe water penetration.

Both membranes have a 30-year warranty and a life expectancy of at least 100 years, and are also BBA certified, making them the only recycled waterproofing membranes with this approval.

Secondly, the Newton BaseDrain and FloorDrain drainage system, comprising of a range of products that collect and discharge water in a Type C system, are manufactured from 100% recycled PVC.

Newton Waterproofing’s MD Warren Muschialli comments:

“At Newton, we are committed to helping shape the green agenda in our industry and provide options for more sustainable construction. Our Recycling Service and partnership with a leading waste management business, combined with a BES 6001 certification and a range of waterproofing products made with recycled plastic, all contribute to our commitment to sustainability.

“We want all our customers to know that when they work with Newton, they’re using a socially responsible company with sustainability at the top of its agenda.”
