Celebrating 10 years of producing the finest windows and doors in the UK, Norrsken’s founders and directors talk about what they represent and why they’re market leaders for performance windows and doors.
Who are we? / Why are we passionate about what we do?
Founded in 2011, Norrsken is a high-performance window & door company specialising in low energy and Passivhaus projects. Providing premium quality timber and timber composite windows and doors, which deliver outstanding thermal performance and excellent durability, we have grown organically driven by our love of the products we sell. We combine the sheer quality of our products with comprehensive and informed customer service – a feature of which we’re very proud. Our reviews testify time and time again to our commitment to our clients.
Our founding directors have completed 10 self-build projects between them and are long-time enthusiasts for energy-efficient building. Constructing his first house in 1985, for example, Director Nigel Jackson incorporated high levels of insulation, underfloor heating with modulating controls, a high efficiency condensing boiler, and low-E glazing. He also installed Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation (MHVR) – a standard now widely used and part of the Passive House Standard’s building criteria – sourcing it from Norway as it was not available in the UK at the time. Our windows and doors are designed to conform to our own high standards of comfort and our belief in holistically designing with the entire thermal envelope of your home in mind.
Norrsken’s commitment to the environment and the promotion of sustainable, energy-efficient design also lies at the heart of what we do. Our strategy is two-fold. Throughout our manufacturing process, only Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certified timber is used, and waste by-products at the production level are reduced – sawdust waste from production, for example, is used to heat the factory.
The energy-efficient nature of our products and the associated reduction in heating requirements is the second, and longer term, impact they have. You can read technical details about the quality and performance of our products, including the effects of low-E glass and low U-values, on our website.
What products do we offer?
The durability of engineered timber, combined with the sleek appearance, near-zero maintenance and weatherproofing advantages lent by a powder-coated aluminium casing are, in our opinion, unmatched.
Made from responsibly sourced, laminated, slow grown timber*, our range of windows and doors are constructed with a huge range of style configurations and possibilities in mind. From traditional cottages with sliding sash-effect windows to wall-to-wall sliding doors , we’ve seen – and produced – it all.
Are you looking for inward-opening windows that tilt-in? Traditional, side-hung outward-opening windows? Fully reversible, or fixed, statement units? Our window selector will let you narrow it down to your ideal specification, or a quick chat with any of our sales team will answer any questions. Composite windows also allow our customers incredible freedom of colour and finish choices – alu-clad windows can be sprayed in any RAL colour as standard, with more options available on request. Windows don’t have to be simply functional – but they definitely shouldn’t sacrifice performance and comfort in the name of aesthetics. Ours, we have taken years to ensure, are a stunning combination all these things.
Bringing the outside in has never been easier than in our current age of design and construction – and there’s no more impressive way to do it than with a statement door. Sliding doors, multi-pane folding doors and French doors are some of our most popular products. They maximise exposure to natural light and allow a near-seamless transition from indoors to the glorious outdoors. Entrance doors are also a favourite with clients – we love the bold colours we see used in recent projects. For inspiration on what you can really achieve with our doors, we’d point you to our Gallery page. When attempting to quantify the difference a door makes to a home, pictures really are worth a thousand words.
Where, and on what scale, do we operate? What does a customer journey look like? Aftercare?
Norrsken supply and install our quality products throughout the UK. Many customers use our windows and doors in thermally efficient new-builds, Passive Houses, constructing their ‘dream’ homes, or in the renovation of existing buildings where the performance and thermal envelope will be significantly holistically upgraded. Our commitment to post-installation aftercare and customer service limits our radius of installation availability to slightly south of the Scottish border, but we ensure a high level of communication throughout the process with every client. Whether your goods are to be delivered via HIAB or articulated vehicle to site or installed by our own experienced teams, we keep you informed each step of the way. Read our customer’s recent experience from her supply-only project in Scotland here.
We’ve put together a detailed journey map for our clients of how it works when you work with us, and exactly what you can expect, here.
One of our self-build renovation clients recently put together a refreshingly honest summary of his own experience with Norrsken over the course of his project – read his words here. Other projects include the multi-award-winning Seaton Beach Development in East Devon – one of our largest commercial projects – and a recent contract new-build on the Isle of Wight, which we’re excited to see coming together.
What are our favourite projects?
Our favourite projects have varied from gorgeous oak-filled barn refurbishments and low-energy passive houses constructed with traditional design at heart to stylish modern projects that have opted for bold, clean lines and a seamless indoor-outdoors feel. Our products are used carefully and to great effect throughout, creating spaces that are beautiful – both to look and to live in.
We love the variety of projects we work on – commercial spaces, new-builds; even two developments featured in George Clarke’s well-loved TV Programme “Ugly House to Lovely House” – you can see one of them here.
