National Custom and Self Build Week, taking place 6th – 12th May 2019, will link with Grand Designs Live, to see a variety of talks, headed up by Kevin McCloud, along with one to one expert advice focusing on Self-Build taking place throughout the show on weekdays, including topics themed around ‘Busting the myths of Self-Build’.
The National Custom and Self-Build Association (NaCSBA), and Grand Designs Live feel strongly that supporting this initiative in a cohesive capacity is important to help encourage the increase in UK self-building, as it currently falls well behind other European countries. The self-build sector accounts for 7-10% of completions in the UK, while in Austria it accounts for around 80%. Evidence suggests that 53% of people in the UK would consider building their own home given the opportunity.
National Custom and Self-Build Week 2019 will include a series of events to assist aspiring self-builders with a simplified step by step process and advice on the best route to achieve their dream home. Visitors will have access to source the right architect for their project; choose from passivhaus to sympathetic renovation specialists all under one roof.
Hosted by NaCSBA, it’s a chance for everyone to learn more about creating a bespoke dwelling designed around their lifestyle needs, with options including working with a custom build developer or local housebuilder, self-managing a self-build project or doing as part of a community group. Those searching for a plot to begin their project on can also take this opportunity to sign up to their local, government backed ‘Right to Build Register’ via the Right to Build Portal on the NaCSBA website.
NaCSBA and Grand Designs Live will also hold a parliamentary reception on Tuesday 7th May from 7pm in The Houses of Parliament. This invitation-only event will be hosted by the All- Party Parliamentary Group on Self-Build, Custom & Community Housebuilding & Placemaking with the likes of The Housing Minister, Kit Malthouse, Richard Bacon MP and Kevin McCloud will be in attendance. Grand Designs Live would encourage the public to get involved with this exclusive event by submitting questions to the panel through the Grand Designs Live social media or email via info(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)granddesignslive.com
