High Barn (Phase 1), Hampshire

This house has evolved from a farmer’s longhouse. It is set on a hillside within a protected ‘area of outstanding natural beauty’ in the Hampshire countryside. It has been remodeled to capture the spirit of the original farm building, and extended to reach out and connect with its surrounding landscape.

The main building accommodates living and sleeping areas within a sequence of both small and large-scale spaces. It links below ground to a new kitchen, dining and utility wing that is carved into the slope of the hillside. This addition is formed from a scattering of rendered walls and glass that sit unobtrusively next to the main building.
