Site visit helps Construction Students build knowledge

Students who’ve set their sights on working in construction swapped the classroom for a building site in Halling to enhance their learning.

Medway UTC in Kent specialises in engineering, construction and design, and has partnered with housebuilder Redrow.

As part of the collaboration students in year 10 (14 and 15-year-olds) studying for the BTEC in Construction and Built Environment alongside their GCSEs visited Redrow’s St Andrews Park development.

Carl Holdaway, teacher of construction at Medway UTC, said:

“As part of their BTEC qualification, students are learning about the technical aspects of building including things like sub and super structures and thermal insulation and so visiting St Andrews Park and seeing homes in various stages of construction was a useful experience for them. We’re grateful to the Redrow team for sharing their knowledge and helping to build on what the students are learning in the classroom.”

There’s a mixture of male and female students on the course and the girls in particular found it inspiring to see that the site manager and site assistant at St Andrews Park are both women.

Year 10 student Connie Huntingford said:

“I really enjoyed visiting Redrow’s St Andrews Park development. It was a great experience and I learned a lot about what they do on a daily basis. I left feeling really inspired.”

Redrow area construction manager Mike Tynan said:

“During the site visit the students showed real enthusiasm for learning more about the industry, which was great to see. They asked lots of questions and were keen to know more about how we build homes and how we apply the theory they are learning about in the classroom to a ‘real-life’ development.”

As part of the partnership Redrow is hosting a series of educational visits, offering students the opportunity to work as trainee site assistants and offering live project experience to complement their studies.
