Students in West Lothian are gaining vital workplace experience and learning new skills thanks to the linkup between Novus Property Solutions and West Lothian College.
The Novus office in Bathgate has partnered with the college as part of the construction firm’s Changing Lives initiative, with the aim of helping students to become “work ready, employable, successful learners”.
Opportunities provided for students through the partnership include work placements, professional speaker visits, and sector-specific employer engagement days, and students are being scored on the new skills they acquire through each experience.
Trainees selected for work placements through the initiative are becoming part of Novus’ Bathgate team, with a number trainees each year getting an insight into the day-to-day running of the company named Employer of the Year at the 2015 Construction News Awards.
Students are developing their skills by working on the Novus Helpdesk and contributing to vital administrative tasks that are essential to the smooth running of the 118-year-old company.
West Lothian student Stevie-Lee Rowland, who completed a four-week work placement as part of the Novus Support Team, said: “The time I have spent here at Novus has been amazing.
“I feel lucky to have been given this opportunity. Everybody here is so lovely and kind to me – I have never felt this comfortable in a work environment.”
“I have grown accustomed to the office and the duties. I have made new friendships with amazing people, and I’d like to thank them for teaching me new skills and helping me build my confidence.”
