In the field of veterinary science there are few institutions with the reputation and heritage to match the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and the College’s Hertfordshire Campus has now been further enhanced with the construction of a RIBA Award winning Student Village featuring over 6500 m2 Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board.
The RVC Student Village provides 191 en-suite bedrooms separated across five separate blocks along with a restaurant and meeting rooms. Hawkins\Brown designed the student accommodation to seamlessly blend with its greenbelt surroundings, using locally sourced red cedar and Bronsgroen bricks. The buildings also provide a high level of energy efficiency and were certified on completion to BREEAM ‘Very Good’.
To help minimise heatloss Kingspan Insulation’s premium performance Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board was installed as part of the external wall build-up. The product holds LABC System Approval for use in rainscreen applications, helping to streamline the Building Control checking and approval process and features a highly insulated core delivering thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 W/m.K.
In addition to this outstanding thermal performance, Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board can also contribute towards a number of other BREEAM credits including Responsible Sourcing and Embodied Impact. The product has been assigned the highest possible Green Guide Summary Rating of A+ and is certified ‘Very Good’ under the demanding BES 6001: Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products standard.
Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board is supported by Kingspan Insulation’s Technical Service Department which can provide specific U-value calculations for the product’s use with a wide range of rainscreen systems.
The RVC Student Village won a RIBA Award and a RIBA East Education Award in 2012 and features several other energy saving measures including grey water recycling and solar water heating. A state of the art Teaching and Research Centre has also been constructed at the Hertfordshire Campus, helping to maintain the RVC’s place as a world leader for veterinary training and research.
