Levitt Bernstein selected by Eastbourne Borough Council to redevelop Devonshire Park

New cultural vitality and visibility will transform Devonshire Park into ‘one of the UK’s most distinctive and talked about cultural places’.

Levitt Bernstein has been selected by Eastbourne Borough Council to lead a design team to transform Devonshire Park in Eastbourne. The team was selected from 5 competing design teams.

Devonshire Park is currently home to 3 Grade II/II* listed theatres, the International Lawn Tennis Centre and world class lawn tennis courts, an art gallery, conference facilities, and several council office buildings and is already host to six major tennis tournaments each year including the prestigious pre-Wimbledon Aegon tournament. Levitt Bernstein will work alongside sports consultants TrioPlus Sport & Leisure to enhance the tennis facilities on site. The planned transformation will build upon and diversify the Park’s strengths with the ambition for Devonshire Park to become one of the UK’s most distinctive and talked about cultural places.

The transformed Devonshire Park will be both a celebration of the park’s past and a catalyst to its future. Key heritage buildings including the Devonshire Park Theatre, Congress Theatre and Winter Gardens as well as the surrounding public realm will be renewed, maximising their usability whilst simultaneously connecting currently disparate elements of the Park and improving the Park’s connection to the seafront and town centre.

Levitt Bernstein’s early designs propose the addition of a new ‘welcome pavilion’ that sits alongside restored heritage counterparts. Together, their visual signature is intended to become synonymous with Eastbourne’s hosting of prestigious tennis tournaments, conferences and arts events.

Coupled with the proposed landscaping of the park and enhanced tennis facilities, the site will play host to year round exhibitions, concerts, cultural events, and outdoor activities, as well as tennis. New facilities will allow partnerships with artists, local and national businesses and sporting bodies to be formed and will create opportunities for investment and economic well being for the town as a whole.

Work on the designs will start immediately.
