Just when you thought it was safe to go to bed!

It should be the most relaxing place in your house, but it turns out to be one of the most dangerous with an estimated 230,000* Brits experiencing bed-related injuries (or BRIs) each year.

A study of 1,000 households by Furniture123.co.uk, reveals a BRI injury list ranging from falls and stubbed toes to bad backs and insect bites, which makes going to bed seem like an extreme sport.

Children are revealed to be the most at risk, with 31% of families revealing that bedrooms are not always the safest places to play. Jumping on your bed might seem like heaven to a three year old, but most parents are all too aware that it often than not ends in tears and a sore head.

Mark Kelly, marketing manager at Furniture123.co.uk advises: “When designing a child’s bedroom it’s important to remember that it will be used for much more than sleeping. Creating enough space to play without the risk of collisions with furniture, and pushing the bed against a wall can help to reduce accidents. Ensuring children’s rooms are kept neat and tidy is also not only good discipline, but will also mean they are less likely to trip or hurt themselves due to debris.”

The most common BRIs are aches and pains often caused by old and inadequate beds and mattresses. 45% of people reported that they often wake up feeling stiff and sore and that the majority (52%) haven’t changed their mattress in the last 10 years.

Kelly adds, “Getting the right pillow and mattress is not only key to a good night’s sleep, but can also prevent pain from bad backs and sore joints. The common wisdom is that a mattress should be replaced every five to seven years, but poor quality mattresses may not even last that long.

“Of our sample, 48% of people admitted having a mattress that dips in the middle which is a sure sign that it’s in need of replacement.”

Some households admitted an even more worrying problem, with 3% saying that they had woken up with insect bites.

“People who find themselves with insect bites may have a bed bug infestation,” says Kelly. “While the bites aren’t harmful in themselves, there are various treatments to rid your bedroom of an infestation before they spread to other rooms in the house. A great preventative measure is to use a mattress cover and to wash it regularly.”

The most common bed-related injuries according to the research were:

  1. Bad backs / joint pain – 45%
  2. Trips and falls – 12%
  3. Stubbed toe – 6%
  4. Tea / coffee scalding – 4%
  5. Insect bites – 3%
