AS LOCAL and Community History Month (May) draws to an end, it’s almost time for a major Redrow housing development in Woodford near Stockport to write its own chapter in history.
A huge operation to prepare the site, once home to Woodford Aerodrome, where the historic Lancaster bomber was built, is well advanced and sales of the new homes are expected to launch in June.
Woodford Garden Village will see the creation of up to 950 homes together with shops, a £3.5 million new primary school, a public house and traditional village greens.
As part of the development agreement with Stockport Council, Redrow will be funding more than £9.5million in community benefits through section 106 contributions. These include providing 143 affordable homes on site with an additional contribution of £4,065,000 to the council to provide affordable homes elsewhere.
The new primary school will be built following a commitment of £3,500,000 and £1,360,000 will be given over to subsidise current operation of two local bus routes to ensure their frequency.
£19,500 will fund cycle parking facilities at local train station while cycle links from the site to Poynton village centre will also benefit from a £360,000 boost.
A further £188,000 will go towards improving local road network improvements and public right of way improvements around the site will be made at a cost to Redrow of £464,370.
The first phase of the development on Chester Road will include 145 homes in a range of sizes, from two to five-bedrooms, with show homes due to open this summer.
Jason Newton, sales director for Redrow Homes (NW), said:
“It is the end of an era for this historic site in many ways, but it is also the beginning of a new chapter in Woodford’s history.
“Woodford was renowned for building the Lancaster bomber, famous for its daring Dambusters Raid in 1943 to target dams in Germany’s industrial heartland and help Britain’s war effort.”
He went on:
“Woodford Garden Village will be more than just a new development, it will be a whole new community, complete with a new school and significant improvements to the local area.”
Now embarking on a new life, Woodford Garden Village will feature properties from Redrow’s sought after Heritage Collection which combines traditional, craftsmanship exteriors with bright and airy, contemporary interiors, designed with the demands of today’s modern family in mind.
The properties feature open plan living, many with spacious kitchen, dining and family areas which will undoubtedly become the heart of the homes.
Woodford is situated is in the middle of the larger towns and villages of Handforth, Bramhall and Poynton, each with a good selection of local amenities. It is just five miles from Stockport, and close to road and rail links to the nearby city of Manchester and the whole of the north west.
