Delivery of Knight Dragon’s 160-acre Greenwich Peninsula masterplan, one of the largest regeneration schemes in Europe, reached a significant milestone today, as stakeholders joined together to celebrate the first three residential schemes being built to their upper-most point.
The ‘topping out’ ceremony was jointly hosted by main contractors, Wates; the lead for plots 114 and 115; and GB Building Solutions, lead contractor for plot 117, to mark the progress made on the first 506 of 10,000 new residential units at Greenwich Peninsula Riverside.
Representatives from Knight Dragon Developments attended the event alongside development partners, Greater London Authority and the Royal Borough of Greenwich, all of which have worked together to create the brand new London district.
The milestone comes as Wates and GB Building Solutions progress with construction of plots 114, 115 and 117, which include 201, 144 and 161 apartments respectively. An additional five apartment buildings are also currently under construction, with the first completions due in Summer 2015.
The 10,000 residential units at Greenwich Peninsula have already been granted outline planning. 454,000 sq ft of office space has also been built as part of the scheme, which has achieved a BREEAM rating of Excellent.
The ambitious regeneration scheme is set to build on the extensive development that Greenwich has seen to date, including the iconic O2 venue, North Greenwich Tube Station and the UK-first Emirates cable car that spans the river Thames.
Once complete, in total Greenwich Peninsula will include:
- 62,500 sqm of commercial, retail and office space
- Over 10,000 residential units across 51 residential developments, providing homes for 23,000 residents
- 48 acres of green open space
Richard Shroll, Business Unit Director, Wates Construction London & Kent, commented:
“The vision for Greenwich Peninsula really sets the bar for urban regeneration and we are very proud to be entrusted with its delivery, alongside our colleagues at GB Group.
“Wates is also currently delivering the marketing hub for Greenwich Peninsula, which showcases the exceptional quality of the apartments that will be available when completion is reached.”
GB Building Solutions executive chairman, Martin Smout said:
“Reaching this important milestone is indeed a proud moment; it has been achieved thanks to the professionalism and commitment of every single project partner. GB is delighted to be involved in this transformational development.”
Richard Margree, Chief Executive of Knight Dragon Developments, concluded:
“This ceremony marks a very exciting phase of the development on the South of the Peninsular Riverside, and moves us one step closer to seeing residents living on this iconic new development next year.
“Greenwich Peninsula represents a unique opportunity to reinvigorate the area, and Knight Dragon remains fully committed to delivering this landmark scheme, creating thousands of new jobs, enviable new homes and a thriving community where people will want to live.”
