Ex-battersea power station sales chief joins Redrow

Redrow’s new Southern Counties sales director James Barnes can bring the benefit of personal experience to a number of the homebuilder’s current developments.

Born on the south coast and brought up in the New Forest area, James is the perfect advocate for the beauty and appeal of Redrow’s Lymington Shores waterfront development in Lymington, Hampshire.

Having spent 10 years as an Army officer, he’s also well aware of the challenges faced by many ex-service personnel when adjusting to civilian life, so has a particular interest in Redrow’s redevelopment of the former Erskine Barracks, in Wilton, Wiltshire. Working in partnership with OurEnterprise and the Wilton Community Land Trust, this scheme will feature a veteran’s care community, offering homes, a care home and community crèche, plus training opportunities for veterans.

And, having commuted to London for many years from Stockbridge, in Hampshire – where he lives with his wife and two young children – he’s familiar with the opportunities his ‘patch’ offers to city workers looking to escape to the country.

Based in Camberley, Redrow Homes (Southern Counties) is focused primarily on Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, West Sussex and parts of Wiltshire, with properties ranging from the company’s traditional Arts & Crafts inspired Heritage Collection to the contemporary apartments and luxury waterfront villas at Lymington Shores.

Having left the army in 1998, James went into the estate agency business, with Hamptons International, later running his own property sales and marketing consultancy promoting resorts in the Caribbean, Canada and coastal Europe. More recently he was sales director of Ballymore, in London; and, latterly, sales and marketing director of Battersea Power Station Development Company, overseeing the record breaking launch of the 800 luxury properties within the first phase of this iconic building on the banks of the River Thames.

His move to Redrow stems from a search to achieve a better work-life balance. James explained:

“I had been looking for a role outside London for some time but it had to be the right role. I specifically wanted a quality housebuilder and when I learned that Redrow was starting up a new division in this part of the country, the right opportunity finally presented itself.”

“Redrow offers the combination of an excellent and proven product and a business that has a very sound and solid track record, recently announcing record turnover of £864.5 million and pre-tax profits up 91% to £132.6 million.”

As well as the developments in Lymington and Wilton, Redrow Homes (Southern Counties) is currently building in Bracknell and Woodley, in Berkshire; has just sold the final apartments at Farnborough Central, in Farnborough; recently secured planning permission for almost 250 new homes as part of the wider Berewood development in Waterlooville, Hampshire; and is preparing a reserved matters application for new homes on an 8.5 acre site in Addlestone, Surrey.

James added:

“At Southern Counties our collective ambition is to become the most profitable division within the business and we are on track to have nine sales outlets open by the end of this financial year.”
