This year the annual CIBSE ASHRAE Technical Symposium will host over sixty presentations and papers covering themes such as occupant comfort, the building performance gap and improving the energy efficiency of future cities. Leading industry professionals and academics will share new research and case studies around the subject of ‘Moving to a new world of building systems performance’ at the event. The Symposium will be held on 3rd and 4th April 2014 at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin, Ireland.
Now in its fourth year, the Symposium brings together world leading building services engineering and environmental designers, scientists, researchers and practitioners. They will focus on the latest thinking and forward looking best practice that will shape an effective and sustainable future for the built environment. Presenters and delegates from around the world will provide insight and analysis and be able to share their experiences and forge new relationships.
Both CIBSE and ASHRAE Presidents alongside team members from the UK, North America and Ireland will take part in a debate about sustainable cities on 3rd April. ASHRAE’s 2014 New Face of Engineering, USA-based Rebecca Delaney, will be attending and representatives of the CIBSE Young Engineers Network from around the world will be actively participating.
The Symposium reflects ASHRAE President, William Bahnfleth’s presidential theme ‘Shaping the Next’ where he has called for industry professionals to serve the public good by providing built environments that are safe, healthy, productive, and comfortable as well as sustainable. This in turn complements the CIBSE President, George Adam’s presidential theme of ‘Whole Life Thinking’.
In a full programme, speakers this year include Chris Grainger, Buro Happold, presenting on ‘Secondary Heat – London’s Zero Carbon Energy Resource’ while Daniel Wright, Pratt Institute, USA looks at ‘How New York City can reduce its carbon footprint 90% by 2050’.
Meanwhile Alan Smeaton, Dublin City University, will share findings from his studies on human processes related to decision-making around domestic energy use. Meanwhile William Whistler, of Green Building Solutions International, Dubai, will be considering how energy consumption, indoor comfort, air quality and health will figure in the swiftly developing air conditioned buildings in the future cities of the world’s warmer climes.
The topical issue of building performance benchmarks will be covered with a presentation on tailored benchmarking and its application to design and actual energy use and papers comparing the ASHRAE and UK energy certification schemes and another comparing BREEAM and LEED.
