As part of its vision for enhancing Edgbaston, Calthorpe Estates has developed a masterplan on how future leisure and retail could be developed to create a high quality urban village within a mile of Birmingham city centre.
The area will be called The Village, and includes developing a vibrant centre that would cluster facilities around those which are already present, such as the Morrisons Five Ways scheme and new leisure attractions, in addition to creating new and linking current public open spaces to establish a mixed use core centre.
The Planning Framework is in the early stages and it is being discussed with Birmingham City Council before going forward to a consultation period, which could start towards the end of this year.
Ralph Minott, Director of Development at Calthorpe Estates said;
“We have a strong business and residential community on the Estate and we believe a Village heart to Edgbaston is something both residents and non-residents would like. It would enhance the area, increase the selection and choice of quality leisure and retail facilities, as well as build on Edgbaston as a prime commercial centre. The area we are considering stretches from Five Ways down Harborne Road in a triangle down Highfield Road and back down Calthorpe Road. This falls in a conservation area and we would ensure we maintain the heritage and the attractive buildings and settings.
“Although it is good to have a vision, planning and moving schemes like these take careful planning and consideration. Key to The Village’s success will be attracting the right mix of operators that will complement what is already here.”
If the proposals are well received the masterplan will form the basis of future discussions with key partners and Calthorpe Estates will look at changing the use of specific buildings for leisure and retail purposes, undertake public space landscaping, and create strong street signage to connect areas together.
Edgbaston has excellent rail, bus and transport links and has some of the best leisure facilities, including the Edgbaston Stadium cricket ground, The Priory Tennis Club, Edgbaston Golf Club, the Botantical Gardens, The MAC at Cannon Hill, Winterbourne Gardens and the Elmhurst School of Dancing.
In addition, it has the award winning Simpsons restaurant, The Blue Piano and The Swan. Peach Pubs will soon be opening a gastro pub, and The Edgbaston an exclusive cocktail bar and boutique hotel is also planned in Highfield Road at the end of 2013.
