Metsä Wood calls for UK entries into innovative modular element design competition

Metsä Wood is rewarding innovation in modular element design by offering 30,000 Euros in prize money for exceptional designs, submitted as part of their Open Source Wood initiative.

The Open Source Wood platform, due to launch early in 2018, is a unique project designed to encourage professionals to share their knowledge and ideas in order to foster innovation and further advance the use of wood in the construction industry.

Ahead of the official platform launch, architects, designers and engineers are being urged to upload designs of one or more building elements or modules using Metsä Wood’s Kerto LVL (laminated veneer lumber) product as a major component.

Other criteria for the award are:

  • Fast: the design enables fast building processes.
  • Light: the design is lightweight.
  • Green: the design improves the CO2 balance of the building.

A first prize of €10,000 will be awarded, along with two €5,000 second prizes and five third prizes of €2,000.

Designs must be submitted online at www.opensourcewood.com by the 31st December 2017.

Once submitted, all designs will be uploaded to the Open Source Wood platform once launched in the New Year.
