House building company Brick by Brick submits first planning applications

A house building company established by the council to boost the supply of affordable homes in Croydon has submitted its first batch of planning applications.

Brick by Brick was set up to ensure people in Croydon had access to high quality and affordable housing and the programme will deliver around 1,000 new homes on 50 smaller sites across the borough by 2019.

The first in a series of planning applications was submitted by Brick by Brick this week. Two more sets of planning applications are to be submitted in the coming weeks, with the final batch of applications due to be put forward by February 2017.

Croydon’s population is growing and is set to rise even further, which is having a huge impact on the demand for homes and the affordability of those homes, leaving many local families struggling to buy or rent.

As a result, half of the properties built by Brick by Brick through the smaller sites programme will be affordable homes, with the remaining 50 percent being private for sale.

Councillor Alison Butler, cabinet member for homes, regeneration and planning, said:

“With demand outstripping supply leaving many of our residents homeless or stuck in temporary accommodation, Croydon took control and came up with an innovative way of addressing the borough’s housing need.”

“It is great news Brick by Brick has now submitted its first batch of planning applications, and that more are due for submission imminently, which – subject to planning permission being granted – will accelerate the delivery of new homes in Croydon and give local people much needed access to high quality, affordable housing.”

Managing Director and CEO of Brick by Brick, Colm Lacey, said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to submit our first planning applications. Our schemes have been shaped and informed by engagement with local residents and we feel they can start to address the chronic lack of supply of high quality multi-tenure housing in the borough.”

“Through our local sales policy we aim to ensure that Croydon residents have priority access to these properties which will be developed on sites throughout the borough.”
